Coaching Professional Development

Overview

Level 1 Professional Development

The following topics are recommended for Professional Development upon completion of your Level 200 USA Rugby certification. A maximum of 2 Professional Development Credits will be awarded for each of the topics. Preference will be given to providers who incorporate practical sessions that allow coaches to practice these skills. Terminology should align as closely as possible. Updated terminology will be brought forward in 2020 in conjunction with National Team collaboration.
    1. Efficient Foot Placement
    2. Use least amount of movement
    3. Hands over wrist, wrists above elbows, elbow in
    4. Snap legs together on jump
    5. Maintain rigidity and good position for lift
    6. Jumper engages core
    7. Big hands, soft hands
    1. Feet shoulder width apart
    2. Feet facing forward
    3. Feet in split stance on grip of jumper. Follow through the hips to "become tall"
    4. Front lifter just above the knees
    5. Back lifter hands under the buttocks
    6. Drop hips under and drive hips through. Chase feet to finish underneath.
    7. Full extension and lock elbows.
    8. Lifters finish on tip toes
    9. Lifters finish chest to chest-creating A-frame
    10. Lifters heads in neutral-strong, safe and funtional position
    1. Feet parallel
    2. Knees slightly bent
    3. Shoulders square to lineout
    4. Core muscles activated to stay tall
    5. Power through core. Hips first then legs and arms
    6. Fingers spread
    7. Ball straight behind head
    8. Chest up and high during the throw. Stay tall
    9. Backswing from core and hips. Keep elbows tight throughout.
    10. Concentrate on follow through
    11. Point to target. Hands come through together
    12. Throw through the target
    13. Jumper should intercept the throw.
      1. Foot pattern
      2. Foot placement

      4. Shoulder shot
      5. Arms- "Rings of Steel"
      6. Chase feet after contant
      7. Follow through/Finish
      1. Foot pattern. Start from inside out. Control feet.
      2. Foot placement- Aim to get close and underneath ball carriers center of gravity
      3. Step hitting leg into ball carrier's "V".
      4. Focus on outside leg
      1. Disapearing- speed of drop to get into a good postion. Don't sit!
      2. Shoulder shot- put hit in with shoulder at proper level
      3. Arms- have strong arms and working arms to lock "rings of steel"
      1. Chase feet after contact and steal the inches
      2. Follow through and finish- using momentum to regain feet
      3. Contest possession

    2. Head neutral
    3. Shoulder girdle flat- Squeeze scaps/"Proud Chest"

    7. Knees bent at 120 degrees
    8. Feet level at impact
    1. Hit at bullseye level, not shoulders above or below hips
    2. Head neutral
    3. Shoulder girdle flat- Squeeze scaps/"Proud Chest"
    4. Spine in Line
    5. Feet shoulder width
    6. Feet facing forward
    7. Knees bent at 120 degrees
    8. Feet level at impact

Planning Sessions Level 1, 2, and 3. Online 2 credits will be awarded once examples of the 3 levels of Planning are submitted to education@usarugby.org

Additional Recommendations for Professional Development

2 Credits each for completion of the online program. Administration 101 USA Rugby Touch Judge Course Technical Zone Course Completion of Online Strength and Conditioning Course. 5 Credits Completion of Strength and Conditioning in-person course

Level 2 Professional Development
